Autoversioning, Subversion and WebDAV

Paul Everitt pointed out the fact, that the latest apache and subversion are able to do autoversioning over WebDAV. This means, that you can mount a subversion repository with (almost) any WebDAV client and then load and save it and the new version will automatically be checked in into subversion. Cool stuff.

You need the latest Apache httpd 2.1 from their CVS to make it actually work... More tips also in our Wiki.

The bright-colored world has one annoying snag in the world of Windows;

You cannot read directly from the WebDAV'ed directories files and then just save your changes. You must copy the file to your local harddrive, then edit it there, save it, and then copy it back to the webDAV folder.

It is surprisingly stupid, and the one to blame is apparently poor / incorrect support for WebDAV for Windows. When MS made it, they apparently created it for their BizTalk server (or some other server) with a specific behavior. Does all this sound familiar? :)

Anyways, no one has yet cracked this (as far as my research and nosy poking the developers of Subversion has given me) but should be high up there. Unix, with proper locking and such doesn't seem to be affected.
