Swiss People. Vote!

Another voting weekend for Switzerland in approx. 2 weeks for its citizens. This time about joining the Schengen/Dublin treaty and allowing a registered partnership between gay couples (and some regional things, less interesting for this blog)

Both national votes are quite important IMHO and I already casted my vote (thanks to voting-by-snail-mail). So everyone, who didn't vote 'till yet, please do (and do the right thing, meaning just write "Ja" ;) )

Ignoring the fear campaign, there are legitimate reasons for voting against Schengen. Among them are:

- Reduced security: spot checks by border guards are more effective than relying on the SIS database. Databases don't give you security, people do!

- Not more convenient for tourists: Switzerland currently allows visa-free entry for citizens of some countries that most Schengen countries currently require a visa for. With Schengen, I suspect that Switzerland would be pressured into requiring visas for those visitors in the name of harmonization. And Schengen visas aren't that convenient to obtain -- there is a two-week processing period because all member countries have to give their approval!
